The clinic

Cold is a tool. We treat it like one.

Still pale water at the clinic's cold-plunge pool

The clinic started because two of us watched the cold-plunge trend turn a real physiological tool into a contest. Polar Plunge Therapy Co. opened in Reykjavik in 2020 when Dr. Sigrun Hardardottir, a cardiologist tired of clearing people after the fact, partnered with exercise physiologist Tomas Eriksson to build the opposite of a dare.

Every client clears a cardiac screen before their feet touch the water. The program runs eight weeks, the temperatures are written down, and a supervisor stays on the deck the entire time. We track resting heart rate, heart-rate variability, and recovery so the benefit is something you can see on a chart rather than feel in a video.

We have turned people away, and we will again. Cold is a tool. We treat it like one.
