A 6-week immersion protocol reduced IL-6 and CRP versus controls, with the effect concentrated in participants who completed at least 80 percent of sessions. The trial was small and unblinded, so we read it as supportive, not settled.

Cold Water and Mood Regulation
Mood · 2019Cold immersion produces a measurable short-term lift in mood and alertness.
Self-reported mood and vigor rose for two to four hours after immersion, with a noradrenaline surge as the likely mechanism. Durable mood effects beyond a single day were not demonstrated, and we say so on the intake call.

Habituation of the Cold Shock Response

After six immersions the gasp reflex and the spike in heart rate and ventilation fell substantially. This is the most robust finding in the field and underpins our short, supervised early sessions.

Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness After Cold
Recovery · 2018Cold-water immersion reduces perceived muscle soreness after exercise.
Pooled trials show a reliable reduction in perceived soreness 24 to 72 hours post-exercise. Effects on actual performance recovery are smaller and noisier, and chronic use may blunt training adaptation.

Norepinephrine Response to Cold
Mood · 2000Cold immersion produces a large acute rise in plasma norepinephrine.
Immersion produced a two-to-three-fold rise in norepinephrine, a plausible mechanism for the acute mood and alertness lift. Whether this translates to durable clinical benefit is a separate, weaker question.

Immersion produced immediate rises in heart rate, blood pressure, and cardiac output. This is exactly why we screen for cardiac risk first and supervise every session; the load is real and not trivial.
